20 Somethings use Communal homeownership to start sooner.

All things considered, Stacy Morris and Jamee Lakas got along awfully well sharing a cramped dorm room at the University of Waterloo. So well, in fact, that the roommates speculated that some day — if they were both single — they would buy a place together.

They didn’t wait long. At age 25, Ms. Morris and Ms. Lakas already had their down payment together. They enlisted a real estate agent and began house hunting.

“With people getting married later and the high price of real estate downtown, it makes sense,” says Ms. Morris. “It’s also more fun than living alone.”
